1) I’m new to (or interested in) homeschooling; can MHSRC help me get started?  MHSRC is not an accountability association.  If you are new to homeschooling, you first need to join an accountability group as required by SC law.  They will be your main resource for all homeschool related questions.  We are happy to answer any questions pertaining to how MHSRC can fit into your educational plan after you have joined an accountability association.  You can think of us as a partner in your child’s education, not the ruling authority.

2) What exactly is MHSRC?  We are an organization that provides high quality, à la carte college prep classes for homeschool families.  While we offer classes, we are not a school.  Your child’s homeschool education begins and ends with you.  We are simply offering classes to assist you in implementing your child’s educational plan.

3) What ages/grades? We offer classes for 6th grade through 12th grade.

4) Is MHSRC right for my child?  We interview our students to make sure each child we admit is able, well-behaved and motivated to do well.  If your child is not interested in learning, studying, doing daily homework or applying themselves, we are likely not the best fit for your family. Additionally, attendance is required. If your family is unable to commit to having your child in class for the majority of the school year, we are likely not the best fit for your family.

5) Is this like Classical Conversations?  Do you follow a Montessori philosophy? Or (fill in the blank)?  MHSRC does not follow a particular homeschooling model or philosophy.  Our teachers independently select curricula based on appropriateness of content and how well they think it will prepare your child for college.

6) My child is an advanced X grader; must he/she take only typical X grade classes?  No, your child may take the classes they are ready for, as their intellectual and maturity levels allow.  However, we may require a placement test before accepting him/her into a class to ensure success.

7) How many classes does my child need to take?  Your child can take as few or as many classes as they need.  You can think of us like a college campus; some students come for only one class and others come for several.  You will hire the instructor for each individual class you choose.  Students arrive and leave throughout the school day according to their individual schedules.

8) My child is not a Christian; is that ok?  We are a Christ-centered resource center, and Christian concepts are discussed and woven throughout our classes. While we do not focus on any particular doctrine, all of our instructors share their faith through teaching. If your child comes to us as a non-Christian, we sincerely hope they will learn the love of Christ during their time with us.

9) How much involvement is required from the parent?  Our instructors will lecture on Tuesdays and Thursdays, grade your child’s work, and offer support as needed.  Additionally, they will provide plenty of homework throughout the week to ensure mastery of the taught subject.   However, you, as the homeschooling parent, are the ultimate resource and guide for your child, and your supervision out of class is critical for success.

10) What’s the difference between College Prep and Honors?  All of our classes are rigorous, though age appropriate, and taught at a true college prep level.  If an extra challenge is desired, an Honors option for high school classes may be selected where offered for an additional fee.  The instructor will inform you what extra work will be required.  Eligibility for Honors credit should always be verified with your accountability association prior to enrollment.

11) Will you accept my child who has learning disabilities/special needs/has an IEP/requires accommodations?  Most of our instructors are not trained in special needs education. Additionally, given the fast pace and deep dive required to master the taught material, we have found that we are not well equipped to provide significant accommodations. Since we want to be a source of help and not frustration for you and your child, it is important for us to meet to assess how well we will be able to meet your child's needs.

12) My child has been expelled from public school. Can I still enroll him/her at the MHSRC? We do not accept students who have been expelled for drug use, violent behavior, or other criminal activity. If your child was expelled for reasons other than these, you may submit a request to the MHSRC Board for consideration.

13) Do you offer sports?  We do not offer sports, however Providence Athletic Club (PAC) is a large, local sports league specifically for homeschoolers.  It is a wonderful organization that many of our families utilize and offers many different sports options for boys and girls at the Varsity and Junior Varsity levels.  We encourage you to visit their website for more information:  www.pacpanthers.com

14) I’m ready!  How do I enroll my child?  Great!  The best first step is to call MHSRC, ask to speak with the director, and tell her what classes interest you.  We can have a quick chat to make sure we’d be a good fit for your family and go over any questions you may have. At that point, the director will advise you on your next steps.
